Laternenfest 11NOV2016

On Friday, November 11, 2016, at 6:30 p.m., the school held its annual “Laternenfest” – a celebration observed in many regions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland in honor of St. Martin, a kindly Roman soldier, who, as legend would have it, cut his cloak in two and gave one half to a scantily clad beggar lying in the snow.

Swinging homemade lanterns and singing traditional songs, students, parents and staff paraded through the grounds of the Excelsior German Center in Oakland, and at the end of the procession, delicious” Weckmänner” awaited the children.
